Announcing 2014 Themes and Schedules

Third Flatiron will be soliciting SF/Fantasy/Horror short stories with
the following themes during 2014. Themes are designed to be
open-ended, allowing authors considerable leeway. We appreciate short,
imaginative tales, preferring those that work with the theme in some
way. Short humor pieces can be on any theme. Please submit during the
reading periods.

Spring 2014 - Astronomical Odds
A "mathematical" issue. Stories that involve time and space scales
orders of magnitude apart, the lottery, overcoming great hurdles,
surviving in alien conditions when rescue is impossible, defeating
overwhelming enemies, deviance from the norm (social and/or
statistical). Note: No over-the-top erotica, please.
Reading Period: November 15, 2013 - January 15, 2014
Writer Deadline: January 15, 2014
Publication Date: March 15, 2014

Summer 2014 - Intelligence
Stories could include AIs, the Singularity,
military/industrial/political intelligence, nonhuman/uplifted or
hybrid/human species, extreme thinking (ESP/telekinesis), ethical
Reading Period: February 15 - April 15, 2014
Writer Deadline: April 15, 2014
Publication Date: June 15, 2014

Fall/Winter 2014 - Abbreviated Epics
Short stories with epic themes: Swashbuckles and sorcery, alternate
history (e.g., Napoleonic era magic, steampunk), megalomania,
Frankenstein-type tales, creation myths
Reading Period: July 1 - August 31, 2014
Writer Deadline: August 31, 2014

Meteor Story by Marissa James

It will be fun to have a third entry from the ever-entertaining James
S. Dorr, as well as pieces by both new and established writers.

A Classic from Michael Fedo

Also notable in this anthology is a reprint of a classic story, "The
Carnival," by Michael Fedo. This story was published back in 1968 in
several Scholastic Magazines. Since then, it has become something of
an iconic story with middle school and high school students around the
country. The story has its own Wikipedia page, and each year the
author receives numerous queries from students and teachers about the
story, though the story has long been out of print. We agree that it
merits republication, and we feel that this anthology as a whole
treats a literary theme that will be interesting to teachers,
students, and SF/Fantasy fans alike.
