Interview with Author Angelique Fawns

Hi, Angelique. Can you tell us a little what your story, "The New Mutants," is about?

I've always been fascinated by the concept of masks and anonymity. How does hiding one's identity affect behaviour? My story explores how a lack of accountability combined with mob mentality leads to a troubling new post-apocalyptic society. I would classify "The New Mutants" as a short where Lord of the Flies meets Station Eleven.

The story was penned before COVID-19 shook the world, but the idea of how masks influence society is even more relevant today.

How did you come up with the idea?

I've always been a fan of the post-apocalyptic genre, and I liked the idea of society being divided by musical preference as opposed to politics or socio-economics. Music is a global language which transcends race, religion, and country lines. I liked the idea of warring parties finding common ground through love of music.

What is your inspiration for writing as a whole?

I've always been a writer, even if I have spent most of my career as either a journalist or commercial creator. There are so many wonderful stories in the world, I hated the thought of mine being stuck in my head for eternity. Even if only a few eyes read my words, the act of getting them on paper is so intensely satisfying.

Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

I'm Canadian with a journalism degree and the travel bug. I figured the only way to learn about different cultures was to experience them. Using a brief stint as a flight attendant to help demystify (and afford) air travel, I worked in Australia on a radio show, and then did a stint in the Canary Islands writing for a tourism paper. But then an opportunity to work in Canadian media opened up, and I started my career with Global TV. For over twenty years I have helped promote primetime TV. As a "predator," I watch the programs before they air and pick out the tantalizing bits to create commercials. Then I write the copy and edit the spot together.

Any new work we should keep an eye out for?

I am working on my own anthology of previously published short stories. However, I thought it could be a combo of the stories and how they were published. Almost a learning tool for new authors on how to submit and get started and what current publishers are looking for.

And just for Juli's curiosity, what are you reading now?

I am reading an anthology edited by Stephen King called "Flight Frights" So good.

I read a novel every couple days.
LOVE thrillers.
