Interview with Author Eve Morton

February 2023

Hi, Eve. Can you tell us a little what your story, "All Our Signs Align," is about?

I love sign language, though I am not deaf or hard of hearing. Since having kids, I've been surrounded by a lot of "baby sign" vocabulary in books and parenting resources, which reinvigorated my interest in ASL over my mat leave. This story is one of the many consequences of my ASL exploration, and blending it with other cultures (like parenting and kid culture!)

How did you come up with the idea?

I'm a prof at a university teaching media and language, which means I talk about communities a lot. This is one of my many stories that basically tackles the idea that "people--or alien---cultures matter" especially the artefacts of those cultures.

What is your inspiration for writing as a whole?

My life is better when I do it.

Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

I love writing! Right now, I have a random selection of books I've been managing to finally get around to publishing thanks to COVID making me stay home. I also have two boys, a wonderful partner, and a fish tank. I teach at a university and a college and I really like watching Forensic Files. I'm from Canada and I really like it here, except for the cold.

Where can listeners find more of your work?

The majority of my novels are pulpy, either romance, erotica, horror, mystery, sci-fi, speculative... basically what I feel like. I would suggest checking out JMS Books for my novels and/or check out "Eve Morton" on Amazon to get a broader selection. If you liked, "All Our Signs Align" and you dig LGBTQ content, you may dig my scifi rom com, "Self-Care in Space."

Any new work we should keep an eye out for?

A new novel I'm digging right now (even though it's mine!) is my queer horror road trip story called, "The Last Piece of Us." It's taken SO LONG to come out--I wrote it in 2016!!--and I'm just thrilled that it's finally here. I don't even know what else to say, other than I'm just happy it's finally out.

(And just for Juli's curiosity: What are you reading now?)

I'm so in love with KC Davis' How to Keep House While Drowning--but since that's nonfic, I'll just say that thanks to Michael LaRonn, I have a new appreciation for Jurassic Park. So I've been reading that and having a blast.
