Interview with Author Taylor Dye

November 2023

Hi, Taylor. Welcome to the podcast. Can you tell us a little what your story, "Changing of the Guard," is about?

As an answer to a prayer, two “children” arrive in an urban neighborhood looking to help.

How did you come up with the idea?

Unless I'm forgetting something, "Changing of the Guard" was the first piece of fiction I’ve ever written. In terms of the plot, I recall planning ahead (which is unlike my typical process now). The inclusion of angels came, at least in part, from one of my mom's favorite shows to watch when it was on, "Touched By An Angel." And the instance of children playing in an urban setting—an "urban playground," converting the city into their own use—has long been something I find appealing for some reason—perhaps, again, from cartoons and TV shows I used to watch.

What is your inspiration for writing as a whole?

I'm sure 99% of my interest in writing comes from my interest in reading, which came from my mom. However, I didn't even consider writing anything (I'm not even sure I seriously realized writing could be a career) until I was bored (and nearly falling asleep) at a job after graduating college. Writing seemed like a fun way to stay awake (my day job certainly wasn't doing the trick), and starting with "Changing of the Guard," it has ever since.

Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

I'm a complete and utter mystery, haha. Though I do live somewhere in the USA...usually...

We note that this story is part of your "The Intermediaries" series, which seems to have sort of an "Equalizer" fantasy theme. Where can listeners find more of your work?

Check samanedna.com (which I'll eventually get around to updating regularly again), or search "Taylor Dye" on your favorite bookseller's website.

Any new work we should keep an eye out for?

I'm always working on something new. Along with notifications from your preferred bookselling website, my site, samanedna.com, will also eventually have details on new and upcoming releases.

(And just for Juli's curiosity: What are you reading now?)

Just finished a Charles Dickens biography by Michael Slater, and I'm now reading The Quick Fix by Jack D. Ferraiolo, which is a funny, Raymond Chandler-like noir set in a middle school.
